Generosity- #UgBloggers7Days
Its
day two and I am picking my brain for something to write about. I’ve been
staring at the computer for a while and I have come up empty… in fact, I think I
am at the point where I’m painfully counting every word hoping I reach 250 words real fast. (Imagine
what people who do this everyday have to go through).
So
finally the genius bulb lights up and voila! I have an idea.
I
will begin with a disclaimer! Anything on this blog that sounds genius is entirely
the work of my evil twin.
We
are a selfish community! Yes, we are all about me, me, me and some more me! If
you do not believe me, ask your neighbor the last time they did something for
someone without being nagged by endless advertisements, phone calls, sms and
now whatsapp! We have become a generation of ‘nfunira wa’ who are only
willing to give a bit of our time and money in exchange for something.
We
are the sort of generation that will spend lots and lots of our money on booze
and a good time and throw coins for a worthy cause that can probably save a life.
We do charity work because Social Corporate responsibility is part of the
company chart and it comes with new company t-shirts.
I’m
not saying that I’m any better. I mean; I also get caught up in trying to catch
up with the world and end up forgetting that the core value of humanity is to
share what you are and what you have with others. We are the generation going
to raise a new one and we need to prepare by being a giving generation so as to
teach the next generation to share and be there for others.
It’s
kuriche (more commonly known as cliché); but start small and you will see how
gratifying it is to help change someone’s situation. Cut a beer and a stick of
pork this weekend and give it to someone who needs it more than you do.
My
life was changed because an Italian I had never met heard about orphans in Gulu
and was moved to pick up the Card with the name Ruth Adong and from P.6 to S.6
paid my fees in full, every term out of their own savings. All I had to do was
write Christmas messages and perform well in class. I didn’t get to meet them but at the back of
my mind I know I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for their generosity.
Maybe
I haven’t given back as much as I would like but I am working on it. On that note,
allow me send a special thank you to 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation for
reminding this generation that we too can make a difference with whatever
little we have.
